Tater’s Take on Ashton and Mila’s Letters for Danny Masterson

Danny Masterson from That 70’s Show and The Ranch was recently convicted of two rapes and sentenced to 30 years in prison.

I have not read the sentencing guidelines for the state, so I have no idea how that compares to what would be expected for such a crime. I do think that it is good that a convicted rapist, especially a famous one, is going to prison and paying for his crimes. I wasn’t sure he was ever going to face the consequences outside of losing acting jobs.

All of the talk now has shifted to the fact that Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis wrote character letters for his sentencing. I made the mistake of watching a couple of Tik Tok’s on this and now my feed is full of people with mostly negative views of the two along with rumor and speculation that Kutcher is just as bad as the person in prison for rape.

Now, that might be true. I don’t know any of them. I don’t know if they are good people.

What do I know?

I know that they wrote a character letter for someone they have known for years. Apparently, so did 48 other people. This is a common practice when it comes to sentencing. Usually, it is not so public.

I know that I would be shocked if any of my friends were accused of such a terrible crime. Some of whom I would never believe did it regardless of what the court said. I would stay in denial the rest of my life just based on what I think I know about them. I would be tempted to say yes if I was asked to write a character letter.

I know that if I suspected someone was capable of such a crime I would not still be friends with them nor would I write them a letter.

I know that one person’s hero might be another person’s monster.

I know that it is easy to sit at a keyboard and judge how someone else reacts to a friend being convicted of a terrible crime.

I know that the people who deserve to feel a certain way about the letters are the victims, not the people using them to make money on TikTok.

I think it is terrible that TikTok creators are exploiting this crime to get views.

I know writing this kind of puts me in the same circle as the TikTok people.

I know that I’m happy the victims got to see their rapist face the consequences of his actions.

I know, given all of this, that I am going to withhold judgment of Kutcher and Kunis for writing a letter.

  1. They shouldn’t be persecuted for writing good standing character letters. It is possible for someone to conceal a hidden side. I think its more a shame that the crimes happened 20 years ago. That there was potential for more victims in that time span. It sucks that people are still scrutinized for reporting rape in todays culture, because I am sure thats why the women hesitated. I have a friend serving time for stalking. In all the years thst I have known prior to his conviction he never came across as someone capable of that charge. I only know my friend as my friend and continue to be in contact while he serves out his sentence. If i had an opportunity to write a good standing character letter I would have.

      1. I am tired of the guilty till proven innocent mentality as well…i had another friend who was caught up in a crime he wasn’t party to. He went along with a vigilante as a journalist but had no idea this guy had mass artiliery in his trunk. He served pretrial time but got out with a time served plea deal against the vigilante. Dude lost his graphic design clients and was persecuted in comments sections…took his own life. 😕🖤
