I’ve mentioned a few times here that I don’t really feel like part of the community at the farm where I volunteer. I enjoy the work and I like the people, but I always feel like I’m on the outside looking in when it comes to the community.
Every so often, some little things make me feel more included.
When I first started working there, I did Saturday mornings. Saturdays are very busy and can be hard for someone new because you don’t have time to learn how to do things. I just felt like I was in the way. One person, however, always found me and asked me if I wanted to help them groom and tack a horse. It helped.
There is a new employee at the farm who has been very good at making me feel included lately. She always says hello. She calls me over to show me things when she is in the barn, Yesterday, when I was with the horse she was about to ride she said if I had time she would show me how she stretches the horse before she rides. I’m sure she does that with everyone, but for someone like me who has felt like an outsider, it feels nice to be included.
Sometimes the little things can make a big difference.
I am glad you shared this.

Thanks for sharing this Tater. It’s a good reminder that we can all have a positive impact on another person’s life by doing the small things.

It’s a good thing to aspire to. And there’s no doubt that it can help with mental health. But try not to add it to your list of must dos. When you suffer from anxiety, that list can get a bit heavy.

It can be small things that make a difference. I try to remember that when I’m out an about to smile and ask how the postal worker, grocery clerks days are going.
