Queens premiered last night at 10 on ABC. As always, the old guy watched this morning.
The Premise
The four stars of a once-popular girl group reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had in the ’90s.
Tater’s Thoughts
Queens starts with a look at each of the main characters as they were in a Nasty Bitches music video in the ’90s and then a flash forward to now. As one character puts it later in the show, they are now a mom, a washed-up musician, a disgraced daytime talk show host, and a lesbian church lady. They are given the opportunity to reunite to perform at an awards show. After initial refusal, they agree to do the show.
I thought this was a very good first episode. We get a good glimpse of where each of the women is in life now. We see the good and bad in the reunion for each of them. The show doesn’t drag out the initial reunion at the awards show. That performance happens at the end of this episode followed by a scene that shows us where we are headed next. I believe this was a good decision. If the show was all leading up to one award show performance I don’t think it would have held my attention for more than a couple of episodes.
The show is very well cast. Eve is the stand out as Brianna, once known as Professor Sex and now a married mother of five. Pepi Sonuga is very good as Lil Muffin aka Lauren, the young star who they will perform with at the awards show. I hope we also see more of her story as a journey to empowerment after being controlled by her “people”
I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this show. I would recommend it to anyone.
Sadly I forgot to record it. I think I can pick it up though, as this sounds like something I would enjoy.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they run the first episode again in a spot like Saturday night

I once had a friend that worked in retail in Philly in the 90’s right before Eve hit it big in the music business.

She is very good on the show. I’m not too familiar with her music. I was out of the music mainstream in the 90s
