My Week in Books, Movies, and TV 5/21/21

My weeks have been different lately. My wife is at her mom’s house. My daughter was home, but had school stuff to deal with every day until Monday. She left Wednesday to join my wife. They will be gone until midweek next week. I’ve had a lot of time alone and then time with my daughter. I sleep less when she is home due to staying up late watching TV with her and still waking up early. All of this changes my reading and viewing habits. Here is my week.

Movies

I did not watch any new movies this week. I thought we would watch a mafia movie this week but then my daughter decided she would rather watch something else. I did watch an older movie yesterday while home alone. It was Get a Job. It stars Miles Teller, Anna Kendrick and Bryan Cranston. Teller and Kendrick are a young couple just out of college. She has a job. He is struggling to find a good job. His dad, Cranston, loses his job and struggles to find another one. It is pretty good. It’s a great cast. It is funny. I enjoyed it.

TV

Most of my TV viewing is still guided by my need to clear shows off my DVR. It’s hard now that I have fewer shows I watch alone. I watched the series finale of Last Man Standing last night. I think they did a good job with the final episode giving them a way to say goodbye. I watched Legends of Tomorrow with my daughter. I love that show. We started watching an old season of The Amazing Race. I’m looking forward to the time when they can film new seasons. I’m happy to see Survivor will be back in the fall. I did watch a new Netflix sitcom this week: The Upshaws. It stars Kim Fields, Wanda Sykes and Mike Epps. It is about a working class family in Indiana. Epps and Fields are married. Sykes is her sister. They have one kid who was born when they were in high school, two younger kids, and he has a son with another woman he was with when they were “on a break”. Nothing spectacular. A standard sitcom, but I liked it. Sykes is very funny.

Books

I finished one book this week: Ocean Prey by John Sandford. I’m a fan of the Prey series. I’m a fan of the Virgil Flowers series. This one has Flowers and Davenport. I liked it, but it was too long. No thriller should be over 400 pages long. So much time was spent on details of a stake out or police chase. It was too much. It took away from my enjoyment of the book. Trim it down and it is a good story.

On Deck

I’m alone for the next six days so I need to find shows and movies to watch alone. I have a few shows that will record to watch and then I will need to find something streaming to watch. There is a ton out there. I just need to figure out what I’m in the mood to watch. I hope to find a decent movie to watch as well. I’m reading The Power by Naomi Alderman but I’m having trouble finishing it. At this point I am sure it is me, not the books. I have a reading block right now and it sucks.
