I obviously lied in the title. If I really had no word there would be no post. There is a post which means there are words. What I don’t have are words that will make anything about what happened in Orlando yesterday better. It was horrific and the family and friends of those killed will never be the same. Neither will the survivors. They lived, but they will live with this trauma for the rest of their lives. So, what can we do? We can try not reacting to this tragedy with hate. You can’t fight guns with more guns(well, you can, but I think the death toll rises). You can’t fight hate with more hate. Don’t use this to justify your hatred of those who aren’t like you. Building a wall, discriminating against people because of their religion, hating others because of their stance on gun control, etc. does not help at all. It breeds more hate and more division and does no one any good. Worst of all, someone I went to high school with posted on Facebook that he thought this was a hoax as was Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon bombings. If you are so entrenched in your hatred of the government under the “Kenyan Muslim” president that you believe this is a lie, you should probably seek help.
What can we do? Be kind. Love each other. Yes, even the guy from the last part of the above paragraph. Get to know those who aren’t like you. Find ways to help people less fortunate than you. Get involved. Stop electing people who pass laws that allow discrimination against others. Speak up. Speak out. Be alert. Changing your profile picture on Facebook isn’t enough. Change the way you treat those around you. The majority of the people in this country are good, decent people. It’s time we took that country back from the haters.
